I sit in the third row on the end. We just moved here, so I am new to this middle school.
I visit the nurse a couple of times a day, but I go in the back of her office instead of standing in the pill line. Someone once saw me with a syringe and started a rumor that I was a drug addict.
When we go out to a fast food restaurant and all of you are loading up on Mega-Burgers, fries and milkshakes, I just get a plain burger and a diet Coke. People give me looks. Maybe it would be better if I just told you that I have diabetes. It’s really not such a bad thing. I just don’t want to seem different. I see some of you whispering about other kids because they have a different accent or they always get the A on tests. I know that keeping my diabetes a secret could be dangerous, but around here being different is social death. What should I do?
